Starting A Career In A Different Field And How Easy It Can Be

If you’re thinking of starting a new career in a totally different direction than the one you’re in now, but aren’t sure where to start with the transition, then you’ve come to the right place. Whether you’re changing careers to make more money, get a more flexible lifestyle or just to challenge yourself more, it’s a huge life decision and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. In fact, it’s a good idea to evaluate where you are and weight your options before you make a permanent choice, in order to make sure that you choose a career that will be satisfying and rewarding for you. Whether you’ve already started the transition or are still contemplating it, here are some tips on how to simplify the process of switching to another field.

– Get A Personal Perspective:

Try to find out more about the new field you’re venturing into. A good place to start would be to find personal contacts that are currently in your preferred industry, which you can then reach out to for some informational interviews. These contacts can easily be accessed through LinkedIn or by doing a search on your college alumni network.

– Do Some Shadow Work:

To get a more practical feel of what it’s like to work in your preferred industry, request to shadow one or two professionals in that field to observe how they work. Again, your college alumni network is a good place to find seasoned professionals from different industries that would be more than willing to host you as you shadow their job.

– Take A Class:

These days it’s so easy to learn about practically anything, thanks to the wide accessibility of online courses, weekend seminars and evening courses which cater to different learners. Taking a class on your new career will not only broaden your knowledge on the chosen industry, but it’ll also help you to understand recent innovations within t, while networking with like-minded people.

– Take A Bash At It:

Get your feet wet by volunteering or doing freelance work that is related to your chosen field. For example, if you’re switching to a career in zoology or conservation, then spending a few weekends at the local animal shelter would go a long way to help you get over those initial jitters, while learning a few basics about the industry that you won’t find in any textbook.

– Know What You Want:

By the time you go into your new career, you should have a thorough understanding of your own strengths and the value you’re bringing to the table. So, identify your talent and get to know your own personality so that you’re able to recognise what’s important to achieving contentment in your work life. Perhaps your foray into your first career was driven more by necessity or pressure from loved ones rather than passion and your own preferences. Over time, you’ve probably refined those preferences and have now discovered where your true talent lies. Use that information as the driving force behind your passion and enthusiasm for your new career. The sense of purpose and resoluteness you’ll get from that will go a long way to eliminate any jitters or anxiety you might have about the move.

– Raise Your Expectations:

Firstly, it’s important to believe in yourself and your abilities and knowthat there are literally countless opportunities out there that are just perfect for you. So, even if it takes a while to find the right fit, don’t give up. You certainly shouldn’t settle either, but rather raise your expectations and only choose a job in your preferred field that will bring you massive contentment and satisfaction.

– Focus On What Excites You:

Instead of stressing about how well you’ll do in your new role, take the opposite approach and do what excites you. Have fun with your work, follow your heart and don’t be afraid to break the rules a little. Now is your time to shine and if your unique brand of innovation brings a bit of disruption into the field, then so be it.
