Understanding Artificial Intelligence
A few days back artificial intelligence driven humanoid robot named Sophia was very much in news. Saudi Arabia awarded it an honorary citizenship and this is something which we never anticipated to happen. However, robots and other humanoids are successfully engaged in activities like shop floor management and other multifaceted jobs. They are the live examples or testimony of the technological advancements.
Although the common view is that artificial intelligence would take away jobs but according to the reports by Gartner, research firm the job opportunities will increase by 2020. The report makes it clear that AI will certainly not kill jobs but make inroads for 2.3 million new jobs in 2020.
Is Artificial Intelligence good or bad?
According to some futurists, artificial intelligence has been highly exaggerated and this is undoubtedly haunting the minds of people, job seekers, governments, and organizations.
Robots are performing tasks through algorithms and programs without ever complaining or asking for favours. They are programmed in such a way that they keep on learning and are becoming more intelligent. While there is a slight contrary view of some individuals and they think that artificial intelligence is simply a robotic process which is mainly developed to increase the automation level to drive productivity.
While the debate on man versus machines will never stop and the essence of all dialogues, chats, or discussions is that technological development can never be ended. The thought of jobless growth is most likely a matter of concern for individuals who are performing low-end jobs but they can come out meticulously by re-skilling. There are concerns for countries also who see their human capital as great assets.
Technology should always be used for better purposes which should challenge human acumen only for improvement and it could be for increasing productivity or to make a presence in the innovative areas or just to make everyday task interesting.
Positive effects of AI
Research done by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, says that by 2030, 45% of the economic gains will solely be because of product enhancements and in this artificial intelligence would play an important role.
So, the world is going to see advanced technologies like robotics process automation, greater personalized and smart devices over time. It is believed that by 2030 artificial intelligence would make a contribution of $15.7 trillion to the global economy. Technologically we are at a point where we need to identify whether our skills can help in harnessing opportunities in the near future.
At the beginning of 2020, artificial intelligence related job market will show positivity. In terms of employment, the manufacturing sector will suffer by AI whereas education, healthcare, and public sector will witness continuous growth.
As earlier innovation created temporary job loss but soon indicated recovery, artificial intelligence would likely follow this. By improving the productivity of jobs, AI will create millions of new opportunities in top, middle and entry-level positions.
Unfortunately, instead of looking AI as artificial augmentation people confuse it with automation. Companies which are investing in artificial intelligence-driven technologies must focus on augmenting workforce as by 2022 most of them would rely on it to do a job.
Will AI replace human intelligence?
Self-driving cars, ATMs and military simulations show that artificial intelligence is here to improve life. They are here for your promotion. Through the program, machines are augmented to perform human functions. Though AI is not superior to human but it is a matter of concern as the pace with which it is accelerating. Though artificial intelligence enabled machines and robots are superb at completing tasks but these super-intelligent machines aren’t aligned they are going to create trouble. It might create threat by replacing humans in the future. World Economic Forum states by taking immediate steps towards sharing of roles between humans and AI in the near future could help in boosting revenues by 38% and employment opportunities by 10%.
Benefits of AI in jobs
AI applied to highly repeatable work is showing superior results whereas to perform less or non-routine tasks, artificial and human intelligence both will be needed. Though replacing sales personnel through artificial intelligence might not work but multichannel retailers can use them for low-level labour intensive routine operational activities that are now performed by humans.
As such most companies will see AI as augmentation rather than just automation process that eliminate humans from every task.
It is estimated that AI augmentation will help in generating business of $2.9 trillion in 2021
• It will help in the creation of 2.3 million jobs by 2020
• Artificial intelligence will not replace human intelligence but complement each other
AI not to disable people but support them
Though the fears and concerns related to artificial intelligence are logical but technological advancement has always generated more in the process and the fact that some jobs can be done by humans only is a good reason to be optimistic.
